Letter from the Editor

Greetings to our many readers! As the new editor of The Facilitator, I wanted to take a moment to encourage our members to contribute articles on topics that interest them and would interest our other readers. The Learning and Development field is an exciting place to be these days. More than ever before, companies are recognizing the role training and development plays in recruiting talented people, and more importantly, keeping talented people. In CIASTD, we have a wonderful network of people with great expertise to share and I encourage all of you to contribute to that network. Perhaps you would be willing to write one article, a series of articles or a regular column? I am actively looking for someone to write our member profile each month and someone to contribute to a feature on preparations for the CPLP exam. I hope that you will continue to enjoy The Facilitator each month.

June Meeting

Coaching for Results
By Sharon McGuire, Facilitator Staff

In today’s highly competitive environment, employee engagement and leadership effectiveness are paramount to an organization’s success. Why, then, do so many organizations STILL waste 87 cents out of every leadership training dollar? How can an organization maximize its return on investment in leadership or sales force development AND get results that last? And how can an organization create an engaged workforce during times of high-velocity change?

On June 23, 2006, Dan Johnson, CEC, will present Coaching for Results during the monthly CIASTD meeting. Dan is President of Performance Mastery, a performance improvement and executive coaching firm located in Indianapolis, Indiana and has been consulting with organizational leaders on performance improvement issues for over 16 years.
Join us for this program where you will find answers to these questions AND come away with a clear sense of the broad spectrum of coaching, how coaching can have an impact in your organization, and the coaching competencies as they relate to the coaching industry (International Coach Federation) and the CPLP certification program.

April Meeting Recap
Measuring and Evaluating the Cost of Training

On April 28, 2006, CIASTD welcomed Andy McGuire of Roche Diagnostics, who addressed how to accurately calculate the cost of training in his presentation “What is the Real Cost of Training.” The presentation focused on a training cost analysis tool that Andy developed to capture the true and total cost of training in each phase of the ADDIE process.

Participants were asked to consider the costs in developing both a classroom course and an e-Learning course and work in groups to come up with projections on total cost for each training platform. Andy focused on the benefits of using a consistent tool and method for calculating cost so that cost comparisons held more meaning. Several members of the audience received the Training Cost Analysis tool on CD. After the program, Andy e-mailed the tool to attendees who gave him an e-mail address.

Learning Outcomes
As a result of attending this program, participants learned:
• A new way of measuring and evaluating cost of training programs
• Why a structured and common analysis tool is important
• How to identify the hidden costs associated with training

May Meeting Recap
Improving Performance By Blending Energies

The May CIASTD meeting featured “Spiral Impact with Karen Valencic.” Karen focused on her Spiral Impact methodology and how it can be used by workplace learning professionals to achieve great results in improving human performance.

As a past president of CIASTD, Karen focused on the needs of the members of CIASTD to improve both personal performance and the performance others. Participants were engaged in interactive demonstrations that focused on using inner strength and centering techniques to find a graceful way to handle difficult situations in the workplace. Participants left with several reference tools that could be immediately applied to decrease burnout, restore energy, and maintain momentum.

Member Profile

Gayle Beebe
Written by Michelle Burke, Facilitator Editor

This month’s CIASTD member profile features Gayle Beebe, an associate with Bottom Line Performance, whose position is focused on instructional design in e-Learning. She has been with Bottom Line Performance for the last year, learning the job and becoming proficient at Flash programming and script writing. She loves her job and is excited to see how eLearning comes together from design to implementation, and is particularly satisfied when she gets the “puzzle part” of programming figured out. She has had the pleasure of working with ITT on a project and with Healthy Families eLearning program for their MOM Project.

In late summer, Gayle will be completing her Master’s Degree in Learning and Technology from Western Governors University, a competency-based online program that she has found both challenging and rewarding. Considering she has two children at home, she found the online program to be a feasible alternative to traditional classroom training, and was even surprised by the level of engagement and application she was able to take immediately from the classroom to her work situation.

Prior to joining the Learning and Development profession, Gayle was a choir teacher and band director for middle school and high school students for 12 years. She is an active member of CIASTD, attending many of the monthly meetings, and sitting on the Membership Committee.

Professional Certification: CPLP

By Karen Zwick, Facilitator Staff
Over the next several months, I will be writing a series of articles about our newest professional certification, CPLP™, the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance™. The CPLP is offered by the ASTD Certification Institute (CI).

Last year, three CIASTD members, David Davila, Andrea Moore, and I participated in the pilot program for CPLP. Of the more than 600 people who participated nationwide in the pilot program, approximately 300 achieved their certification. David, Andrea and I were all successful in achieving our CPLP certification.

CIASTD will be facilitating study groups to support any members who wish to pursue their certification. David Llewellyn and a team of volunteers will be leading up this effort to encourage and assist CIASTD members in pursuing their CPLP certification.

Why Certify?
Who would you choose to head up your Human Resources department? Sue Adams or Sue Adams, SPHR?
Who would you choose to help you with a difficult tax issue? Bob Smith or Bob Smith, CPA?
Who would you choose to help you manage a difficult project? Bill Jones or Bill Jones, PMP?
Who would you choose to help you set up a computer network? Nancy Johnson or Nancy Johnson, MCSE?

Many industries have a certification of some sort. Why? In a word: credibility.

CPLP offers workplace learning and performance professionals an opportunity to enhance credibility and prove value in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

For more information on the CPLP certification, visit the official web site at http://www.astd.org/astd/cplp
